New mum self-care – making time for yourself is crucial

Becoming a new mum can be the most beautiful and fulfilling experience, but it can also be overwhelming and exhausting. The love and attention you give to your little one can often take away from the attention you give to yourself.

However, self-care is crucial for new mums to recharge, refresh and feel more equipped to care for their babies. From my own experience, here are some tips for making time for yourself as a new mum.

New mum self-care tips

Ask for help

It’s okay to ask for help, in fact, it’s important! Reach out to your partner, family, friends, or community for support. Ask them to take care of your baby while you take a nap, go for a walk or do something you enjoy. You don’t have to do it all by yourself, and sometimes having a break can make all the difference.

Make sure that time you are able to free up isn’t for chores. You need to replenish your energy so you can be fully present for your baby and increase your well-being.

Take advantage of nap time

You’ve probably heard “nap when your newborn naps.” This is quite true and an important new mum self-care tip. When your baby is awake and active, it’s most likely you’ll be either interacting or busy caring for your little one.

While your baby is sleeping, take some time for yourself. Use this time to take a nap yourself, read a book, or indulge in your favorite hobby. It can be tempting to use this time to clean the house or get some work done, but it is important to prioritize yourself and your needs too.

Practice self-care rituals

Just because you’re super busy learning how to be a new mum, doesn’t mean you should neglect yourself. So get out of your pajamas and don’t forget to brush your teeth!

Incorporate some self-care rituals into your daily routine. This could be as simple as taking a relaxing bath, practicing yoga or meditation, or applying a face mask. Whatever it may be, make sure it is something you enjoy and look forward to.

Stay connected

Whether you are usually busy in an office, working from home, or even not working, this is a big change in pace and social life.

As a new mum, it can be easy to feel isolated and alone. Make an effort to stay connected with your loved ones and other new mums. Join a support group, attend a baby class or even just catch up with a friend over the phone. Social support can help you feel less alone and provide a source of comfort and encouragement.

Get outside

Spending time outdoors can be a great way to clear your mind and boost your mood. So put on your comfy shoes, grab the stroller, a cup of coffee to go, and literally step outside.

Take your baby for a walk in the park, and enjoy sunlight and greenery. If the weather is bad, check out your local botanical garden, they usually have a covered space.

Nature can have a calming effect on the mind and body, and being exposed to sunlight can also improve your mood and energy levels.

These new mum self-care tips are pretty straightforward but eager to do well in our new role, we tend to put them at the bottom of the list. Taking care of yourself as a new mum is crucial for your well-being and your ability to care for your baby.

By prioritizing self-care, you are better equipped to handle the challenges and joys of motherhood. Remember, you deserve to take care of yourself too, and there is no shame in asking for help or taking a break when you need it.
